Youth Construction Academy

The Youth Construction Academy is a brand new program by the Southern Tier Home Builders & Remodelers Association in conjunction with Broome Community College. It will be held July 16-20, 2007.  The course brings a week long of full day educational classes to students ages 14-20 about the residential construction industry and shows the entire process of a remodeling/building job, from the initial client contact, through designing, pricing, selling and actual ‘hands-on’ building the projects (3-8’ x 10’ gazebos). The gazebos will be donated to Beautify Binghamton and Sky Lake Camp.

The work plan consists of five consecutive days of instruction during July of 2007.  Classes are from 9AM-4PM daily.  A significant amount of time will be devoted to the construction of the gazebos.  The class of 24 will be divided into 3 groups-each group responsible for a completed gazebo. Members of our STHBRA Education Committee will instruct the classes.   The goal is for the youth to complete the gazebos, have fun, but also learn a great deal about the building industry along the way.

By giving the youth classroom instruction in addition to hands-on training, they have a better idea of what residential construction actually is.  We feel we are planting seeds with these young men and women and they will want to make a career in the residential construction industry, knowing that there is a critical need for any talent in this field where pay levels have increased and the demand is high.  We are hopeful they will be pleasantly surprised to learn that the contracting and construction business has opportunities for all levels of education.  This is a service to our entire community.

We feel strongly that educating our youth of tomorrow is crucial.  While we don’t have deep pockets, we are willing to donate our time, talents and materials/supplies as much as possible.  By forming an alliance with Broome Community College, we are greatly depending on their methods of promoting the academy, as well as the wonderful reputation they have in our area for programs of these types.  This grant would greatly support our efforts of creating workforce opportunities for the housing industry.

YOUTH BUILDING PROGRAM:  Learning for Life

Have you ever considered a career in the home building/remodeling industry?  Would you like to find out through an actual “hands on” experience what the residential home building/remodeling industry has to offer?  You may be pleasantly surprised to learn that the contracting and construction business has opportunities for all levels of education.  Perhaps the most interesting aspect of the building business is the variety of jobs it offers as well as the ability to “move up”.

Whether you are going to college, directly to work, haven’t decided, or have no clue what you want to do, consider this – for each 1,000 homes built, nearly 2,500 jobs are created.  The building industry is a multi-billion dollar business with more than 1.5 million homes built each year.

The Southern Tier Home Builders and Remodelers Association is eager to help you learn more about the profession of residential building.  They are co-sponsoring a program with the Baden-Powell Council Boy Scouts of America.  The course will show the entire process of a remodeling/building job; from the initial client contact, through designing, pricing, selling and building the project.  The program is open to all male and female students ages 14-20.
